Fiona Apple – “Extraordinary Machine”
This is a very wise song: It’s a song that seems to know that life can be hard, and at times painful, insulting, and oppressive. That it wants nothing more than stability and conformity from you. But that it doesn’t matter how life may treat you because you can always make it into a cheerful, sunshiny jaunt. One that’s nice, but not concerned with being “ladylike”. One that’s just a little bit off and that has the stamp of a true sense of self and of individuality. One that doesn’t need validation or comfort from the outside world. One that recognizes what’s likely expected of it, but instead goes off in another direction, doing its own thing. One that embraces change and risk as the only true paths to greatness. One that is fundamentally incapable of being anything other than exactly what is it. And one can do all that because it is indeed an extraordinary machine.
This is a song to live by.
This is a song to embody.
This is a song about you.
