The Go-Go’s – “Our Lips Are Sealed”
Judging by pop culture, it’s a great time for female friendship. Bridesmaids, Parks and Recreation, when People Magazine named Bradley Cooper the Sexiest Man Alive instead of Ryan Gosling – all great examples of female bonding. Yet, it still seems to be a tricky thing for many women in our culture. We live in world that loves to pit women against each other and looks at groups of women as rivals and catfights waiting to happen (catfight – an obnoxious term if ever there was one). And I know a great many women who have had trouble over the years cultivating and maintaining friendships with other women. Which is a shame because the power of women together can be an awesome force.
Women who are determined to stick together and do things as a self-reliant group can create great things (women’s circles for example). They can be at the forefront of new musical movements and new sounds. They can reach commercial heights never before seen by groups that have no men involved. They can address the negative force of gossip and rumors and the importance of solidarity in the face of a society that loves the exact opposite. They can be trail-blazers and trend setters and icons. They can be The Go-Go’s.
They can be awesome.
