Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.
— Pablo Picasso
Summer in New York is a time of year when I look around at my fellow urban warriors with sweat dripping down their backs, furrowed brows, and waves of exhaustion moving through them and I think, “what in the world are we doing here?” It’s the only time all year, aside from shut-the-city-down-snow-days where that palpable energy that jolts us into action is gone or perhaps drained from this place.
We are HOT! How can you expect us to move or breathe or do anything?
Here’s the thing: the subways still run on schedule, meetings are had, bills come in, there is still work to be done. Steps to make. Actions to take.
Can you think of a time in your life when circumstances had you feeling incapable of moving forward? You had a broken bone or heart, it was too hot out or too cold, your business partner was out of town, etc. and you found yourself coming up against extraordinary internal resistant to your work.
This resistance is as real and palpable as our determination. The two are actually opposing forces. One of them will win. It is your choice who walks away with the trophy, you and your determination OR resistance (who will most likely leave you behind with your head in your hands).
I know when I find myself eye to eye with resistance, I do one of two things:
- Give myself a spiritual pep talk, I invite my guides and God to the party. You can do this, Chris! I get myself revved up by aligning with my sense of service and love.
- I just freakin’ do it. I show up the table. Take a breathe and just do it.
In both of these instances my heart gets on board sooner or later. And just like any other time in life, I either knock it out of the park or do, you know, alright.
As wild women and men, to be in the process of creation is to be in harmony with nature. Nature is always making the most awesome stuff! All you have to do is watch a plant grow or leave a field untouched for a month to see nature in action. You can watch a bee hive or an ant hill. Sit on a mountain top or at the roots of a willow tree. Creativity is everywhere. The way we speak creates, the way we treat people creates. Our relationships, our art, our cooking are all acts of creation.
It is important to show up. Nature has your back. Watch your thoughts, watch your words, they are important but ultimately it is our actions that create our life.

Hey I was wondering if anyone could tell me which universities are the best (anywhere) for creative writing? I’m not interested in any universities in ontario because they dont offer the type of courses I want. I was also wondering if maybe there are schools specifically for creative writing? Please help me out, I have to apply in Dec, and I have no idea where I’m going, I just know that I want to write, because writing is my life, and I cant see myself doing anything else. Thanks..
I love to write creative things such as poetry and short stories, but I don’t know what I would be able to do with the creative writing degree. . . Besides an author or poet, what can I do with a creative writing degree?.
