Want to do more of your good work in the world? Want to increase the quality of that work? Want to feel useful and energized?

Me too. Always. Here are 3 things that have become essential to my life and work here on the planet.

They have helped feel connected, engaged, creative and utterly brave. My hope is that these little P’s may do the same for you.

Prayer. I begin every day by reading a spiritual text, praying, or meditating. Sometimes I spend an hour, sometimes 2 minutes. Starting my day connecting to the sacred aligns me with the pulse of my soul. And that pulse has a way of energizing me more than any amount of caffeine.

At the beginning of the day I say variations of this prayer from A Course in Miracles:

What would You have me do?

Where would You have me go?

What would You have me say, and to whom?

Before meetings, when I sit down to write and before I teach a class, I pray:

May this meeting/writing/class bring forth the highest evolution of all souls involved. I am open and willing, please work through me.

Prayer can be an act of surrender that opens us to creativity that is beyond what our logical mind is capable of. As poet Mary Oliver says, “Leave some room in your heart for the unimaginable.”

Feel free to borrow these prayers, until you find words of your own.

Passion is fuel. Locate yours by doing what lights you up. Kahlil Gibran wrote, “Rest in reason; move in passion.”

There may be things on your to-do list that are less than exciting but help you get closer to that passionate place. For instance, re-vamping your resume may feel daunting but the thought of doing that new job gets you pumped. You have 2 options; hire someone else to do it or align yourself with the WHY of what you are doing (that passion place). And go!

Also, music can really help the flow of passion. (The Leonard Cohen station on Pandora as been my passion food and work soundtrack of the last month.)

Purpose.  You are here for a reason. Maybe you are deeply connected to your specific calling or perhaps you have no idea what it is. Trust this: Your presence here on earth is somehow aiding in the evolution of our planet, species and souls.

Whether you choose to think about it actively or not, you are making a contribution to the collective. Are your thoughts, actions and words elevating us, or bringing us down? The more you connect with your purpose/calling, the greater your service to the collective will be and the more enthused you’ll be to get stuff done!

Unsure where to start?

Listen to the words of American author, philosopher, theologian, educator and civil rights leader, Howard Thurman who said, “Ask not what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive… then go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

May the practice of prayer, passion, and purpose bring you closer to the life you are here to live.

Hands at you back,
Chris
