I have worked with hundreds of women in classes, workshops and circles and the desire to be of service runs deep.
We are wired to want to help one another. And it is not a whisper, it is an all out calling.
Being of service means different things to different women. Maybe it’s volunteering, maybe is philanthropy, maybe it’s a calling to the healing arts, maybe it’s a call to be the best grandmother, mother, sister, daughter, wife, girlfriend, friend, co-worker to those in our immediate circles. To each her own.
When I sit with women (myself included), what breaks my heart is the that the call to serve almost always comes with a painful feeling of overwhelm.
“Where do I start?”, “I couldn’t do that.”, “I don’t have time.”, “No one will take me seriously.”, “I don’t know anything about it.” And on and on.
In my WILD Woman Monthly Session in February, our theme was Aligning with Service: Mind, Body, Spirit. We went through 5 actionable steps we can use anytime to be of highest service:
- Identify the issue that is disturbing to you. Be honest with yourself here. What is aching in your household or community that is disturbing to you?
- Feel your feelings in a safe space. If you are at home, close the door to you bedroom and scream into a pillow or punch it. Or even just lay down and have a good cry. Therapy is great for this. And a Lucid Body class will really help you get in there and feel. Whatever you choose, know that the emotion is but one layer of your experience. Avoid identifying with/ getting stuck in the emotion and just let it flow. And when you have really felt it, move into the next step.
- Find your stillness. Maybe it’s meditation, maybe it’s a bath, maybe it’s a walk in nature. Have patience with yourself as you find your quiet.
- Ask for guidance. This is a prayer. Whether your prayer is to your highest mind or a divine source (or both) matters not. The point is to ask for guidance. “What would you have me do?” (Listen with big ears)
- Act on the guidance you were sent. –In her book The Artist Way: The Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity, Julia Cameron points to artists who are prolific. How do they do it, we all wonder? They take the guidance that is sent; They catch the ball. The universe likes when you catch the ball. The more you catch inspiration and bring it to the earth, the more the universe will send you way. Catch the ball.
These steps have been a life-saver to me and have helped my students too. I hope you will try them on(perhaps as a Sunday practice) and see what happens. Hint: You may just experience the fullness of your aligned power (and there’s nothing quite like it).
