Are you dreaming of that trip to Thailand? That sojourn? That crazy amazing island you read about in someone else’s memoir?
Are you waiting for adventure? If so, please say out loud (right now), “I am waiting for my adventure. I hope it happens someday …”
How’d that feel?
My heart hurts for you. Let’s debunk this whole ‘Someday-I hope-If I’m lucky’ nonsense with mini-adventure. Pronto.
As Grambo Maddox (my grandma) used to remind us kids when we were “so bored” in the middle of the freakin’ Smoky Mountains each summer: There are no boring places just boring people.
Boring is not really your thing, right? I thought so.
You wanna bring a friend? Do it. (But don’t wait them).
For the particularly bold, go it alone.
Start Now.
1. Choose– Every great adventure starts with someone who is willing to say, ‘Yes.’ Today, you are that person.
Decide on the when (preferably now) and the where. Use your trusty Google Maps to find a place you’ve never been which you can reach in under an hour via foot, car, train or ferry. New Yorkers and other urbanites, find a neighborhood you’ve never been to-think outside the box.
2. Prepare (or Not)– Pack light, friends-you will thank me later. Going for a hike? Strap on your boots. An art district? Slip on you most colorful kicks-you know the ones I’m talking about.
I highly recommend bringing a small notebook and pen to write down all your ponderings and brilliant ideas.
3. Journey + Arrive–I am lumping these 2 together because I want you to have the exact same relationship to the journey as you do the destination (wink).
But seriously, the adventure starts the second you step outside your front door. Drink it in. Look around. Make eye contact with people and animals. This is an adventure! Act like it.
Which leads me to…
4. Wander–Once you have arrived, put away your map or chuck it. You are here. Let your gut be your guide and your curiosity be your compass.
A traveling buddy and I came up with a game. When we get to any fork in the road we ask ourselves, “Which way looks the most delightful.” And that is the way we go.
For all you Lord of the Ring geeks, remember: “Not all who wander are lost.”
5. Savor– Use all your senses. Listen deeply. Feel your feet on the ground. Taste the air. Stop and smell the tulips. Remember what Thoreau wrote, “It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.”
Very Important Cautionary Note:
Beware of doing it for show. We mustn’t forget what it feels like to experience for the experience of experiencing. In other words, “Climb [the mountain] so you can see the world, not so the world can see you.” David McCullough said that.
Stop Instagraming and Start seeing.
Simple solution to this problem? I dare you to leave your phone and camera at home. Boom.
You are ready to adventure NOW.
Remember #1?
Hint: Say, “Yes!”
New Yorkers, I’m seeing you next Saturday, right? Awesome, can’t wait!
