Last week I asked you, what would you like me to write/teach about and one member or our daring tribe asked: How can a learn to trust my inner voice?

Here’s my big secret: “Trust yourself” is the only thing I really teach.

Everything you will every learn from me is some variation on, “To thine own self be true.”

So, Ms. Wild Woman, here is my Answer to your very important question:

1. Your Mind, Your Instrument

The relationship your mind has with the voice of your soul (the WILD Within) is the most important intimate relationship you will have in your life.

Your mind is the seat your beliefs. Your mind dictates your actions (or inactions). Your beliefs and your actions reverberate and color your emotional and physical bodies. All of those things inside are reflected outward: Your creative output, relationships, home and work life, health, finances, etc.

Your mind is an incredibly powerful instrument.

If you sit back and have no relationship with it, no way of tending to it, everything you’ve been taught by your parents, teachers and society at large will have it’s way with your instrument:

You will be played. Your life, inside and out, will be a product of will that is not truly your own.

Your song will be false, at best and overwhelmingly painful, at worst.

2. The soul, the wild within

When I stepped firmly onto my spiritual path it was because I woke up to the fact that I had allowed myself to be played. I was in profoundly deep pain. My inner and outer worlds were not what I wanted them to be.

I saw how I had created my life but as I looked closer, I realized that this creation was a product of everything I had been sold and unconsciously bought:

  • I believed that my body was not thin enough and the proportions were all wrong and ultimately hideous because that’s what I had been taught.
  • I was pursuing a career I didn’t really want because I had learned from my culture that the only way anyone would listen to you was if you were a celebrity.
  • I was in a relationship that didn’t fit because I thought this was just the way things usually were: People in long-term relationships were all pretty unhappy.

I bought what the world had sold me without thinking twice. That went on for years and wrecked havoc on me.

My emotional pain got so intense that I could no longer ignore this wise voice in me that persistently, yet calmly spoke to me. It spoke to me in the middle of the night. And it was the only thing that could stop my tears and my panic.

This voice urged me to do things that involved deconstructing everything I’d built: The habits around food and substances, the career, the relationship. I was terrified to take action at first but once I started, it wasn’t long that everything started to turn around.

3. Practice: The courage to act on your inner voice

Once you begin a relationship with your soul’s voice (the wild within) it is very hard to go back. It’s like falling in love.  Once you hear the tender voice of your true nature who wants only to guide you toward your highest good, you will not want to live without her(or him).

Keeping your mind clear of impressions from the outside world so you can hear the voice within is where daily practice comes in.

Try these:

If you do one of these things (or one or you make up) every day, you will begin to clear out the cobwebs of domestication and the expectations that can drown out the sound of your inner voice.

Once you do…well…words are inadequate to describe the depth of this experience and the effects it will have on your inner and outer worlds.

One of the reasons I love teaching and leading circle is that it is the one area of my life where I am in complete alignment with my soul’s voice. It’s not even an inner dialogue, she speaks right through me with no delay. I hope that through continued practice, I can be in this state of total connection every moment of my life.

When we are doing what we are meant to be doing in the world, this is what eventually happens: Something very powerful flows through us and we expand. That expansion then ripples out to others and we heal/help each other in some way.

It takes practice to be clear. Patabi Jois, father of Ashtanga Yoga said, “Practice and all is coming.” I couldn’t agree more.

Truth or Dare

Truth: Have you heard the voice of your soul? How would you describe the voice? (answer in the comments section below)

Dare: Practice 1 of the items listed above for 7 days. Start today. All is coming.

With utter love,
C
