About the Campfire Series:
Here at The Wild Woman Project, we deeply believe in the power of learning from and celebrating each other’s diverse experiences, stories, and perspectives. We also believe there is great power in allowing yourself to be witnessed. The Campfire Series gives us the feeling of gathering with our closest sisters around a fire (or a candle, or a bottle of wine) and sharing intimate stories. Naturally, when women gather, no two experiences are the same. These stories can range from sharing deep epiphanies, “hell yaasss” moments, heartaches, and downright silliness.

Freeing my voice
I came into this world with an open heart, great exuberance for life, and a joy for self-expression. Naturally, I was quite a talker and I also loved to sing every chance I got, including on my daily school bus rides; Somewhere Over the Rainbow, was a favorite, Tomorrow, by little orphan Annie was a another.
This zest for life was not always well received by others, there were many moments in my young life where I found myself in “time-out” for talking too much, or laughing too loud, there were lots of eye rolls and comments regarding my school bus serenades and impromptu dance routines.
Slowly over time, these messages sank in and became internalized, the messages I received were- you’re too much, who you are, is not okay; you’re a show off etc. As my perception of myself began to change, I shrank inside- no more talking too much, no more raising my hand in class, or voicing my opinion, and certainly no more singing in public.
Fast forward many years, through incredibly rebellious and troublesome teen years, then finding a spiritual path in my early 20’s, as well as a tribe of friends who had the capacity to embrace all of me. As I matured spiritually, it became very clear that my voice had become so constricted that it was stifling all creativity and expression of my true self.
Once this realization dawned, I made it my mission to free my voice because I knew if I could do it, it could free me. A pivotal moment came about 9 years ago when I decided I would sing This Little Light of Mine in front of a group of 40 people at a spiritual school I had been attending.
The moment came when it was my time to share; my heart was pumping with such vigor, I felt like I was going pass out. When I gathered the courage to sing, I felt an immense energy move throughout my whole being, as a lifetime of repressed expression poured out of me and filled the room. What I discovered in that moment was that freeing my voice would not be a one time occasion, it would be a lifelong journey; one that would continue to reveal deeper and deeper layers of my voice and my true self.

Amanda Salima McCall is a mystic at heart. For as long as she can remember she has questioned and pondered the deeper layers and meanings of life on earth. This questioning led her to become a student of the mystical path of Sufism. After many years of study, Amanda became a coordinator in the Inayati Sufi Order and a graduate of Suluk Academy. She deeply believes that everyone holds within them a divine seed of potential that is just waiting for the right conditions to blossom and thrive. Her devotion to tending to the human experience, body and soul, has driven her personal and professional life. She has been a healing arts practitioner for close to two decades. She is a licensed nurse and is currently pursuing a degree in social welfare. Amanda also enjoys singing and making music with her husband and she believes that life is magical when we are actively participating in the orchestra of our daily experience. Her interest in the subtle yet immensely powerful realm of sound healing lends itself to the ancient practice of Zikr (Sufi chanting). Through this practice, she has come into contact with the way that the word and sound contain vibratory frequencies that help our bodies, hearts, and Souls become in tune with our higher nature. Amanda trained as a Circle Leader with The Wild Woman Project in 2014 and currently leads women’s circles at the Abode of the Message in New Lebanon, NY. She enjoys weaving Sufi teachings and the practice of Zikr into these gatherings. She is honored to co-create a sacred space for women to come together and share, through the unique and potent medium of The Wild Woman Project New Moon Circles.
