A year ago today, Mary Oliver, the Patron Saint of Wild Women, went on to the next adventure.

As an American woman with no traditional spiritual path, from a troubled home, prone to fits of devotion, who often found herself outside wandering or writing or both, Mary Oliver became, through her poetry, one of my dearest elders on a path with no name.

A year ago today, I was just sitting myself down for an afternoon of writing when I got the text. I felt the loss so strong it truly surprised me. Shaking, tears streaming, I gathered my things, and left the coffee shop. When I arrived home, I found myself spontaneously writing her words on my arms and legs.

In that liminal time, between life & death, I could feel her still within reach, but knew it wouldn’t be long until she would feel farther away.

I slept with her books in my bed for a couple of weeks. Sometime in that period, I jotted down this list so I could remember all the ways her writing had become a part of me, my philosophy & perception of reality – forever altered.

So here, I kiss her hands & her pen. And on this, the anniversary of her passing, I share with you:

7 Things I Learned from Mary Oliver

1. Never leave the house without a pad and a pen (especially if you are going for a walk).
2. Life shows off for those who wander.
3. Devotion is not a thing reserved for the religious; it belongs to us all.
4. Uncertainty, when embraced, can reveal doors where there were once walls.
5. Follow your curiosity.
6. Paying attention is a sacred & powerful act.
7. God, if there is such a thing, lives in the butterflies and the mud and the waves of the ocean.

If you want to get to know her, obviously, her many poetry collections. I started with Dreamwork & Felicity is a favorite.

If you want to hear her voice: I love this reading of Wild Geese & this interview with Krista Tippet, recorded toward the end of her life, during which she reflects on what comes next.
