Music, the universal language, has the power to move us, to soothe us, to bring people together across difference.

In Ritual, personal or group, music can help us touch down on the deepest places inside of us, and unfurl our tenderness, our joy, our sorrow, our humanity, and our dreams for the future.

The crafting of the modern mixtape (i.e. a playlist) can be a fruitful ritual of self-care, one that keeps giving, the more you play it & dance it & make it come to life through you.

As a woman who is interested in the interior experiences of women & believes in the elevation of women’s voices, I consciously seek out woman-made music for healing balm & creative inspiration.

For example, I am currently on a writing retreat working on my first book (all about our Wild Woman Project work, btw 🔥♥️🔥). I made a mixtape of woman-made music to help me remember the various parts of me & of our beautiful work that I love so much. It’s been a joy to turn on this mix and dance, sing, and stretch, and remember, during my breaks.

I share a condensed version with you here, just 21 minutes of music, along with liner notes.

I hope you enjoy & I hope you will make your own Self-Care Mixtape for remembrance!

Songs & Liner Notes:

Astral Plane by Valerie June. This song hangs out in a liminal space between the physical & the spiritual and reminds me of the heart of everything I ever hope to know or teach.
A favorite line: “There is a light you have inside you can touch.”

Highwomen by Highwomen. A story song about the generations of rebel-hearted women who have come before us, largely erased from history, misunderstood & persecuted, here, through song, honored for their incredible courage & gifts. I dare you not to cry.
A favorite line: “And we’ll come back again and again and again. And again and again.”

June by Florence & the Machine. This song has been a companion to me ever since the album dropped in 2018. It is a song that helps me process some of the social tragedies and divisiveness of the current political moment.
A favorite line: “Hold onto each other.”

Soul Sister by MaMuse. This is my love song to my best friends & Wild Woman Project sisters. It sings into the incredible power of holding space for one another & believing that each and every woman has *within her* whatever she needs to heal, grow, and know.
A favorite line: “I am here with you and I will see you through to the other side.”

All That You Have is Your Soul by Tracy Chapman. This is a song that reminds me of a profound moment I had during Sara Goff’s opening yoga class at Wild Woman Fest ’15. This song, in that moment, helped me to find the clarity & courage to change my entire life. And I have not one single regret about doing just that.
A favorite line: “He gave his love but what a high price I paid. And all that you have is your soul.”
