The whispers of the coming autumn can be heard in the forest here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. When the wind comes through, there is a new sound, born, in part, out of the subtle change in the leaves who have become a tiny shade lighter just as their edges have begun to curl in ever so slightly, reminding anyone who looks up that we are rounding another corner.

Change is in the air.

I am noticing that many of the people I love are in some form of a recalibration. The people in my closest circle are making big life changes, and life is making big changes for them. From what I can see, these changes are healthy progressions. There is a sense of empowerment to consciously evolve. I feel it too, very clearly, and with deep gratitude.

There is a story I’ve been thinking about a lot recently:

A friend of mind grew up outside of Chicago and there was a lady in her neighborhood who was well into her 80s, and eventually 90s, who could always be seen outside – in her yard, working one thing or another, doing this or that – absolutely vital and joyful. My friend would stand at her fence and ask, “Mrs. Avery what’s your secret?” And she’d reply through a smile, “Can’t hit a moving target!”
As time carries on, I observe its effects on myself and the people around me, just as I do the leaves on the trees. It seems to me, that we are given the choice, again and again, in life:

Will we allow change – inside and out? Will we embrace it, move with it, help it along?

Or

Will we white  knuckle what is? Will we resist the urge to move and change with all we’ve got?

The most vital elders I know, just like Mrs. Avery, don’t allow inertia to set in. They continue to be moved by the process of life – physically, and in their hearts and minds.

So, as the seasons officially turn this week, inspired by the leaves and Mrs. Avery, may we all allow ourselves to feel and embrace the sacred movement of change which is built into every corner of our human experience – inside and out. May we open our hearts to the natural world, which is constantly offering a breathtaking embodiment of this reality. May we bless what has been and open our arms to what is coming.

In change there is potentiality to re-create our lives – most often in small, but powerful ways.

In change there are new perspectives that tickle our imaginations and infuse our dreams with color.

In change there is a remembrance of the sacred, felt in our hearts, which guides us forward into the mystery of the next phase.
