At some point in the journey of the female seeker, we realize that most of the established spiritual traditions were born in periods of time, and from places on earth where women had little or no rights. We eventually see that the beliefs of the time bled into the theology (who could they not?), thus making it nearly impossible for a modern liberated women to not have some serious grappling to do with the traditions and teachings.
I jumped, swam to shore & made my own boat – a kind of patch-work boat made of hand-me-down ideas from my diverse array of ancestors, sturdy lines of poetry I’ve collected over the years, recycled wisdom I’d read in books, enlightening verses from my favorite songs, vivid and symbolic images from fairy tales and dreams and meditations, carefully selected ideas from ancient sacred texts. I poured my heart into making a boat with all my favorite colors and materials from my deepest prayers and most precious memories. A boat with space to stretch out, a boat I could make a home in for the long journey.
In the years since, I have been aiming to make our Circles, Training, Meditations, Festival & Community here at The Wild Woman Project specifically for women who have also made their own boats to come together – a space with some simple, yet potent guidelines to help in the co-creation of a dogma-free, judgment-fee, heart-centered space to listen to our inner guidance – together. To be in spiritual practice & respectful community without needing to buy into a whole religion or belief system.

I love your writing. This piece encourages me to finally build my own boat/dive in the water. Thank you, Chris!!
Thanks, Silja 💓💓💓 and happy boat making!
I LOVE THIS!!!!! Too many spiritual gurus claim that they are teaching the “one true path.” But isn’t that just another demand for conformity? And how can one path fit the diversity of people in the world? The Wild Woman Path isn’t actually a single path at all. Instead, it encourages each woman to listen to her heart and inner voice and design a path (boat) that fits her beautifully unique essence. That’s what I love about the Wild Woman Underground. There’s no judgment, no pressure to fit into a mold designed by someone else. Rather, each member is encouraged to explore and seek spiritual practices that resonate with her and speak to her soul. In the Underground we can be a member of a loving, supportive community while at the same time we are free to be exactly who we are,
Yes, Joan! I Hear that & feel it!
This captures my journey so perfectly. Thank you, Chris.
So glad it rang for you, Cheryl!
Beautiful Chris, well said! I built my own boat years ago. Everyday since, I’ve still been seeking to learn, to try things on for size, to row left then right, then teeter. Finally, about a year ago, I got the courage to verbalize…no thank you to organized religion. Whew! What a mixed bag that was received with! I wish I’d had the beautiful boat reference then, that you gave us today.
So glad to hear you relate. Not Surprised! Miss you dearly. Think of you often xo
