Today I light a candle for the biodiversity of thought. Today I honor all those who think differently than I do, who disagree about the meaning of a verse, or what or who god is – and other tiny matters which surely feel enormous when the scope is zoomed way in.
Today I pray over the flame, May my judgements and certainty turn to ash leaving the only real thing: my dumbfounded heart – who never knows anything for sure, who never judges, who is up for a laugh, who wants to snuggle, and pray, who wishes for more dancing, who only knows how to gather up those wandering delightful fools I call kin and friend in my arms and tell them how much I love them. Even when they are hardened with certainty of their own, and especially because they are sometimes scared, as we all are – floating around in this vast mystery.
Today I let this candle burn deep into the night – when we are dreaming, when we are up with our own minds, when we are under the covers, finally still – so that maybe something of this modest and golden light will find its way back home to our hearts.
In my dreams that light weaves us all back together again, as we once were, and will soon be – whole and humble and pulsing with love.
