The last week has been full of those rare prayers reserved for times of absolute desperation.
You may know I live and run The Wild Woman Project from Western North Carolina, just outside of Asheville. You may know that Hurricane Helene has devastated my hometown and surrounding areas.
It is a miracle that I am safe and able to write this update to you.
There is a little creek that runs around our homestead, and my office sits right beside it. Just before the storm came in, I went in to choose what to save, in case my little She-shed sanctuary were washed away.
It’s a strange thing to make those choices. I grabbed my legal documents, my journals from 2017 to present where all my plans and prayers live, my computer, the pieces of a book project I’ve put serious work into in 2024, and the music box my mother gave me when I was a girl which plays “When You Wish Upon a Star” while a ballerina in a golden leotard twirls.
I left notes all over my office, prayers.
In the depth of the storm I found myself on my knees in the house watching the creek from my window rise and rise.
Please protect us. I imagined a golden bubble around us.
I prayed for all my friends and family. Please let me see them again.
May the waters be merciful, I prayed again and again.
Our homestead and headquarters of The Wild Woman Project were spared. Everyone I love is safe. These two facts are a miracle I will be grateful for until the day I die. We are the lucky ones.
The ancient river and her tributaries washed away homes, businesses, roads, important pieces of our water and electric grids, as well as precious lives, whole families in some cases.
At the time of this writing, it’s the 7th day without power, running water, cell service, or internet where I am. With the help of family and friends, I am able to travel to find internet so I can continue on with my work here at The Wild Woman Project.
While communications are a little slower than usual right now, they are getting better everyday. So please be patient as we get our bearings.
Fall Circle Leader Training begins in one month and registration will open as planned next Thursday, 10/10 at 10am ET. Get all the details about our foundational program which is truly the reason The Wild Woman Project exists right here. If you’re feeling the call, we’d love to have you.
There has never been a bigger need to bring people together in a sacred way, across difference, for healing, centering, connection and joy.
Thank you so much to everyone who reached out in the aftermath of the storm; your care will be remembered. Please keep your prayers coming as we recover, day by day, from this tragedy.
On my knees, my bone-deep prayer was please let us survive, please save our home and keep my office protected so we can continue, I can continue to pour my love & energy into this work of my lifetime. That is exactly what I intend to do.
Thank you for caring enough to read this, and being apart of this work/play. 13 years in, and we are just getting started.
May we continue to be resilient, and yes, to surrender to life, who is always showing us the way.
♥️ + Howls,
Chris
