As a yoga practitioner, I have come to study and understand yoga beyond the asana (the
physical exercises and postures). Part of the ancient formula for yoga was also living a life in accordance with the 5 yamas of yoga (yama roughly translates into disciplines). The second of the yamas is Satya, which means truthfulness. The discipline of being truthful is not only about speaking honestly but also living honestly.

What would it be like to trust your truth and live honestly?

Well the first step may look like finding out who you are. Perhaps doing some digging into your consciousness to figure out what you actually like and dislike, and perhaps noticing the differences between what you actually like and what you have been taught to like. A few years ago, I was living at Kripalu as a volunteer and decided to stop shaving my underarms. I had been shaving my armpits since the first time I spotted a hair as a girl. I started shaving because I thought that is what a woman is supposed to do. Deciding to stop shaving my armpits was away for me to explore what it felt like to have hair under my arms, and a way for me to come to a conscious decision based on what I felt, and not just about what society says.

That’s the thing about living our truth though, it may not be in accordance with the unspoken norms of our families, communities, and societies. And the challenge of living our truth is to do it anyway and withstand the consequences of one’s honesty. Trusting in your truth means trusting that the consequences of living truthfully transform into delight and life lessons.

The sign of Scorpio represents privacy and secrets. Is there a secret about yourself that
you are keeping from others? Most importantly, is there a secret about yourself that you are keeping from yourself? We often hold these secrets in fear, and we believe that if others knew who we truly were, then they would dislike us and abandon us. And we usually keep secrets from ourselves because we are being so judgmental of ourselves that we believe that to admit that we have a quality that society perhaps deems as unacceptable would make it impossible to live as ourselves.

Hiding who we are from the world and from ourselves makes it impossible to live at all. Judging ourselves and fearing the opinions of others limits our ability to live, to thrive, and to grow. Trusting in ourselves is a way to start to open up to who we are and journey into true self-love.

Don’t be too rigid in your truth, it’s ok to change and to experiment! That might be your truth too!
