When the world seems to be in constant flux, when we are bombarded with one message of crisis after the next, when big changes – welcome & unwelcome – knock at the door, moving through life can feel like walking on shaky ground, or like trying to build a house in a wind storm.

I get the sense we are all receiving an extended initiation in living with uncertainty. I see the process of grappling with shakiness unfurling in so many of the people I love, and in myself, and in the culture in which I live. How do we individually respond to uncertainty? Collectively? How do our institutions, organizations, and businesses respond to it? How do we live through this and not just survive, but thrive?

At this point, I have more questions than answers. Which, generally, is the way I like to walk around anyway.

However, the other day I jotted down a list of things that help me stay centered and steady so that I could reach for it in shaky moments. I’m sharing most of the list now in hopes it can help you in shaky moments. I hope you will share something that steadies you too; Perhaps we can crowd-source some more ideas here in the comments.
Here’s my list:

1. Mind the basics. Tending to the mundane can be a grounding force. Are your houseplants watered? Are your sheets clean? Teeth brushed? Oil changed? Laundry folded? And so on, and so forth. Anytime that shaky feeling starts to kick in, it can be helpful to take to a small doable task. Taking care of the basics for your body and home is one way to cultivate a bit of order in your direct environment – this does wonders for helping the mind stay clear.

2. Balance alone time and together time. The ideal balance of solitude and social connection is different for everyone, and frankly, depending upon the particulars of your life is not always easy to find. But aiming for some balance can go a long way. I am one of those who is a pretty even blend of extroverted & introverted, so, for me, when I am feeling off, I often ask myself: Have you been spending too much time alone? Are you in need of some connection? Or have you been so engaged with others that you haven’t had a moment to yourself? Very often, taking action to carve out an hour to journal or a morning go on a hike, or on the other hand, making sometime to have dinner with family or a phone call with an old friend can help me find my way back to center.

3. Take news fasts and social media breaks. I used to find the Buddhist idea, that life is suffering, a little dark for my tastes. And in some ways, it still is. However, in the last hand full of years, I’ve found myself contemplating it often. I mean, for all of human history, there have horrific and/or painful experiences: war, illness, death, violence, natural disasters, oppression, etc. We modern humans have this new dimension of having a front row seat to any horror on Earth in our pockets – at anytime of the day or night. Because there are middle men who broadcast the horrors, we also, get their opinions or slant, and if we wish the opinions or slant of millions of others. Is it okay to admit it’s just a little much? What can I possibly do with all of this disturbing input? When needed, I give myself permission to turn it off, to create boundaries for my heart and mind.

4. Pour your love and your skills right where you stand. So many people I love a respect have articulated some version of this in the last couple of years: focus on your family and on your community. I’ve taken this to heart. When I am feeling a little shaky, I look around and try to pour my love, attention, energy, extra resources into the relationships, the people, the community projects or happenings that mean the most to me. Who do you love? How can you make them smile? Take a small action to do just that.

5. Focus on smaller time frames. It seems to me, these times call for a “take it day by day” approach. In some cases, week by week, or month by month, or season by season will work – so long as you remain open to flow or reroute with unexpected changes. Uncertainty regarding future has a way of amplifying the importance of the here and now. What will you do today, what will you do right now, to take care of body, mind, heart, spirit? All the creative power lies in how you dance with the moment at hand.
