I lived in New York City from the time I was 18 years old until 4 months ago.
New York was my first love. He was fascinating and alive and bustling with the kind of possibilities creative and ambitious people fiend for. I will never be fully over NYC. In fact, I am going back for a few months very soon. I am excited about impending work and adventures but I will be honest here.
I am a little nervous.
New York yells, “Don’t miss it! Run. Go for it. Go after it. Grab that great idea before the next person
sees it, gets it, has it. You can do it! Make it happen! Catch the train. Brave the cold. GOOOO!”
Oy! New York is kind of a spaz. Like a brilliantly charismatic, brutally honest, super-high-strung-friend that is almost too much to handle but is certainly too much fun to let go of.
I am a little nervous because I’ve been living in Southern California for a small time now and what has opened up for me is a deep and profound peace. I know all is good. All is happening. I feel surrendered to my path. My body feels light and calm and easy. I feel as though I have come home to ME.
She whispers, “No worries. Take it easy. It’s all good. You are beautiful. You are taken care of. You
are as divine as the mountains and the sunsets. You are as vast as the ocean.”
I feel a little nervous because now that I have come home to me, I never want to go away again.
But being the New Yorker I am, I can’t help thinking to myself: Well, this is easy. I can do this. The REAL accomplishment would be maintaining this trust, this peace, this surrender in the big apple. Mediating in Times Square, now that would be a practice.
Deep down I know there is nothing to be nervous about because everything we see in the outer world is simply a reflection of some part of us. For me, New York represents my pure masculine nature, my Shiva, my sun, my yang. California is a mirror of my feminine energy, my moon, my Shakti, my yin.
I have within me the brilliantly charismatic, brutally honest, super-high-strung-friend that is almost too much to handle but is certainly too much fun to let go of. He is invigorating and I love him.
I have within me the oceanic, soft ease and surrender of a southern California afternoon. She is bliss and I love her.
CA is within me, not the other way around. NYC is part of me.
The dance is to honor both parts. To allow space for and acceptance of both of these natures within me.
So, next time you find yourself adoring something or someone-remember you are adoring you. Next time you find yourself rolling your eyes or totally judging something or someone-remember you are judging you.
There is nothing to CHANGE in ourselves. We must simply open our hearts to all parts of us. Allow them to be. Love them. Love You.
Love your inner New Yorker AND your inner Angelino.
In honor of that, come Mid- January you can find me levitating above the TKTS Booth in Times Square;)
See you there!
