About the Campfire Series:

Here at The Wild Woman Project, we deeply believe in the power of learning from and celebrating each other’s diverse experiences, stories, and perspectives. We also believe there is great power in allowing yourself to be witnessed. The Campfire Series gives us the feeling of gathering with our closest sisters around a fire (or a candle, or a bottle of wine) and sharing intimate stories. Naturally, when women gather, no two experiences are the same. These stories can range from sharing deep epiphanies, “hell yaasss” moments, heartaches, and downright silliness.

Each Breath is a Chance to Start Again

Breath by Breath

I am honored to be at this campfire with you Wild Women!

It was in my early twenties that I took my first body energy class for eight weeks. There in the meeting room at the stone church on the hill in Norfolk, Connecticut, I learned about the Chakra systems and received a snapshot of my gifts.  We would begin and end each session of this eight week course with breath work.

Before that time, I never thought my breath had a deeper purpose other than, in and out, and keeping me alive. The breath would allow my energies to shift. Who knew that a moment in time could change with consciousness around the action of breathing?

I will humbly admit that I am not the best breather, really who has time to slow it down for a deep breath?!, “ I have to get there, I have to do this thing, I am exhausted, how will this help right now?” I could make a epic list of reasons to not consciously breathe, couldn’t you? This is all rather critical and well, hypothetical if I do say so myself. Speaking from my experience is the only true way to go. The only human way to know for sure and share from that space, so here goes. When clients land on my table, the first request is to find a particular rhythm of breath. I politely request that they inhale through the nose out the mouth, into their belly, giving their ribs a rest and landing.  The great part is I do it with them and we land together in a dance of inhales and exhales. What a gift for me to have another’s rhythm to check my own too!

Two times a month and sometimes more I attend a healing breath work circle in Millerton, New York led by Christine Goulding, (who will be facilitating at WILD WOMAN FEST this year, YEAH),  She taught me a form of Pranayama breath that helps our system access energetic stuck spots. It is quite possibly a miracle to hear her say time and time again, “The breath will do the work.”  My internal dialogue used to argue that and now if necessary I can control what the breath moves for me. With that said, the control means if at anytime I am overwhelmed by the experience of what I have so exquisitely  packaged into my system as it moves, I can gently return to a my regular rhythm and slow it down.

Let me quickly touch back into “the exquisitely packaged” part.  Every time I practice breath work I am blown away at how much I hold onto. I am a creature with many habits and a lot to contend with as the world feeds me with a smorgasbord of life hurdles and celebrations.  If I didn’t have this practice of breath work or slowing my breath all my “exquisite little packages” would eventually cause dis-ease in my system.  My teacher and mentor Christine once said, “Imagine living knowing that every time we take a breath we can begin again.” It is almost too big to wrap my Capricorn brain around, and thanks to Google I can estimate that I have approximately 23,040 breaths of opportunity in ONE DAY!

So let us be gentle with ourselves and remember that having mindfulness around our inhales and exhales helps us remember the gift of life. And there are millions of opportunities to reset this gift.

Blessings on all of you women that came to this campfire, breath to breath, word to word, possibility to possibility.

I will be honored to see you on the mountain at Fest or hopefully in this lifetime, Aimee
