After a year of extraordinary experience, unlike anything we’ve seen in our lifetime, the Spring Equinox arrives in the Northern Hemisphere tomorrow, offering up new life, a vibrant new color palette, more light, plants, insects, animals we haven’t seen in some time. We, like every other member of the living world, have an opportunity to grow forth, to sprout new life, allow new color, dimension, and light to shine through.

It is my hope that we modern humans have been humbled and made aware, in these times, of our blind spots as a species, as members of our smaller communities, and as individuals. It is my hope that as Wild Women we are engaging in ritual and research to help us to learn, to become wise, to remember what is most sacred. Spring offers a chance to do as nature does and try again. To take all we’ve learned in the cycle gone by, and all that we have seen in the visionary Winter time, and remake ourselves and our world.

In these times of Climate Crises, and I hope, radical Climate Healing, one of the main priorities we have as a species is the saving of our habitat, the healing of our Mother Earth – which has been and is currently being denigrated by over consumption via soulless materialism and capitalism’s demand for exponential growth which neither the Earth, nor it’s inhabitants can sustain.

I truly believe that we Wild Women have an important and specific role to play in the Climate Healing. Because we turn to Nature for our Spiritual understanding, because we are consciously cultivating our relationship to the living world, because we are in the habit of charting new pathways, because we are in a continuous process of expanding our capacity to wield love, we are making ourselves fertile ground for new life, new leadership, new collaboration, and new ideas.

So, in honor of the Spring Equinox & devoted to the healing of the planet, I offer up for you a simple, yet meaningful Spiritual Practice.

Equinox Practice: Lay Your Heart Down on the Earth.

Carve out at least 20 minutes to be outside, either on or near the day of the Equinox. Have a journal and a pen, and if you wish, a towel or a tapestry. Read this through first and then do the practice. As always, feel free to add or subtract as you feel guided. Breathe well & take your time.

  • Lay yourself front-body down on the ground, making a little pillow with your hands. If it is comfortable, make a little space between your hands so your forehead can touch the Earth.  (You are welcome to lay a towel or tapestry down underneath you.)
  • Take a few breaths to become present to the physical intimacy between your body and the Earth. Sense the places where your body is pressed up against the Earth. Notice your forehead, your chest/breasts/heart, your belly, your pubic bone, your thighs and tops of feet. Remembering, perhaps, that cultures all around the world have conceptualized the Earth as Mother. Breathe here until you feel fully present and in conscious relationship to the Earth.
  • Then soften your body, letting gravity help you in coming closer to the Earth.
  • Link a breath and a thought. Inhale consciously receiving Earth’s energy into your body and exhale saying, Thank you. Repeat this many times. You are welcome to set a timer for a number of minutes, or to repeat it for a certain amount of breaths, or simply do it until you feel complete. Everyone is different so choose your choice and see how sincerely you can engage in this dance with the Earth.
  • After you complete your last round of breath, and your final Thank you, turn over and feel the Earth at your back and look up into the sky.
  • Dream. Take sometime to vision the healing of the Earth and the healing of its inhabitants, including yourself and those you love. What would radical climate healing look like? Feel like? Ask of you? Ask of us? Remember the words of Gloria Steinem here, Dreaming is a form of planning.
  • If during this practice, you notice something happening in the living world that feels like a hint, a sign, a piece of guidance, take it in. The living world is alive and communicative, just like you. Whether a butterfly flies by, or the light shifts at a certain moment, a bird begins to sing – receive the gift, the guidance, the message, with gratitude.
  • Take some time to write or draw anything you want to remember from this experience. Moving the guidance from the spiritual to the material through our pens is a way to begin to bring ideas into form.
  • To close, offer up a gesture of gratitude to the Earth, to arrival of Spring, to your own heart, and anything or anyone you want to thank. You might simply use your hands to say thank you, you might speak or sing aloud, you might bow. Honestly you can do anything you want to say thank you.
  • If you wish, come back here and share in the comments: one meaningful nugget of wisdom or experience that came through this practice. It’s a wonderful thing to learn from one another. Can’t wait to read ‘em.

Happy practicing!
