When we think about service, and living life in service, what is the first thing that pops into your head?

If you are anything like me, you may have seen an image of some type of holy person – nun, monk, saddhu – who is living amongst communities of people who have been deemed as needy by society – children, elderly, poor people, people living with dis-ease.  There becomes a bit of a hierarchy in the idea that the person who is living in service in doing something that the people s/he is living amongst cannot do for themselves.

I recently read a quote that went something like this, “A leader doesn’t create followers, a leader creates more leaders.”  Who are we servicing when we think that other people need us for their well-being?  Perhaps our egos make like this idea, as we feel self-important, but in truth, we serve no one by making them feel like a victim or like they do not have as much power as we or someone else does.

When I think of service, I think of the Sanskrit word often used in the beginning and ending of yoga classes, NamasteNamaste translates into, “The Divine in me bows to the Divine in you” or “the Light in me honors the Light in you”.  True service is remembering this principle – that we are all lights and that we are all Divine.  True service fights to remind people of their Divinity and inner Light.

When we live in service, it does not mean that we become matyrs or that we become so pious that we think others cannot survive without us.  Living in service means we live aware of serving ourselves and serving others, it means living with a sense of seeing humanity as full of possibility and not taking pity on those that seem to live outside the box, but humbling yourself and your ways to learn from those members of community and hear and relate to them with an open heart.
