Dear Ones,

The very first New Moon of the Season is here!

To celebrate & honor it, we have a very special prayer poem from Diane Ackerman, essayist, poet & naturalist, along with a couple of practices to go with.
Ackerman explains the original intention for this poem, “Years ago, when Congress was thinking about reinstating school prayer, I was asked to compose one. I believed in the separation of church and state as our founding fathers did, and I didn’t want children having to pray to someone else’s idea of God. But I did want them to develop a sense of spirituality – about the planet and each other. So, I wrote this poem.”

As we wander through this offering of prayer, we will zoom in on certain lines & ideas in it. One that stands out as incredibly important for these times is this one: I will not dishonor my soul with hatred ~ which will inspire a practice for the Moon Cycle.

Okay, let’s see what we find!

School Prayer by Diane Ackerman

In the name of the daybreak
and the eyelids of morning
and the wayfaring moon
and the night when it departs,

I swear I will not dishonor
my soul with hatred,
but offer myself humbly
as a guardian of nature,
as a healer of misery,
as a messenger of wonder,
as an architect of peace.

In the name of the sun and its mirrors
and the day that embraces it
and the cloud veils drawn over it
and the uttermost night
and the male and the female
and the plants bursting with seed
and the crowning seasons
of the firefly and the apple,

I will honor all life
—wherever and in whatever form
it may dwell—on Earth my home,
and in the mansions of the stars.
YOUR TURN
After you’ve taken in the prayer poem, in the comments here, I’d love to hear from you: Craft a verse of your own, using Ackerman’s framework, beginning with “In the name of…” Can’t wait to read them. ♥️

Here’s mine:
In the name of the sun shaped weeds
And the bellies they feed
And the purple violets everywhere
And the grasshopper songs of Spring
