Today’s Full Moon marks the halfway point in our “Returning Home” Moon Cycle,  where we are turning our hearts toward home, both our individual dwellings & our shared home, planet Earth. We are aiming to bring loving presence, intimacy, and attention to our relationship with our homes and our world.

For this Cycle’s Ritual Recipe, I would love to share in the  Ancient Ritual of a Home Blessing. This practice dates back thousands of years and can be found across many Spiritual Lineages.  If you are inspired, I would encourage you to look into the origins of this Ritual in your lineage. For our work here together, I will walk us through some simple steps to help you create your own Home Blessing. As always, you are welcome and encouraged to make this practice your own in any way you see fit.

This Home Blessing can be done in a new home, or a well lived in home. It can be done alone, with others who live in your home, or with anyone you’d like to invite into your sacred relationship with your home.

This Ritual can be simple or indulgent (or both!), but your goal is to create a meaningful and personal relationship to your Home.
Step One: Get Centered

“Getting Centered” is something we say a lot, and it can feel mystifying. It’s rather simple, actually. When we talk about “getting centered” we are talking about taking time to connect deeply with ourselves before connecting to something/ someone else. We are aiming to connect with the part of us deep, deep down in our hearts. We are taking some time to turn down the volume of the voice in our heads, rattling off our “to do lists” (and maybe the awkward moment we had earlier), and to turn up the volume of our inner guidance, our inner knowing, deep in our hearts. You may want to light some candles, meditate, take a shower, take some deep breaths, close your eyes, turn on some music, whatever that process is for YOU.

You might be tired of hearing me say this, but you can not skip this step!

This step is the wish before the birthday candle blow out, the theme song of your favorite show that gets you pumped (shout out to “Big Little Lies” theme song), the bending your knees before the jump, the foreplay. . . . it’s just not the same if you skip it.
Step Two: Connection

Take some time to genuinely connect to your Home.

Perhaps you’d like to sit still in each room (with your eyes open or closed) or perhaps you’d like to do a sort of walking meditation.

As you connect to your home, take notice of the relationship you currently have with your home. Is this space brand new and alive with possibility? Is this place well loved, well lived in, and full of memories? Or is this place somewhere in the middle with a more nuanced story?

Let yourself feel into the heart of your Home.
Step Three: Gratitude
(I recommend writing this step in your journal)
Although, we all probably have “wish lists” for our homes, and some of us may have straight up fraught relationships with our homes, take some time to express gratitude for what your home has given you.

For Ex:
“Thank you for giving me shelter from cold and rain”
“Thank you for giving me a place to let my guard down”
“Thank you for letting me express myself”
“Thank you for facilitating my cultivation of deeper relationships with my loved ones”
Step Four: Call in Blessings
(I recommend writing this step in your journal)
It is obvious that your Home will not grow an outdoor patio on its own, but in a deeper sense – what Blessings would you like to ask from your Home? Even better, what Blessings can you call in that would also make your Home happy?

For Ex:
“Bless this Home to be filled with laughter”
“Bless this Home that all who enter feel welcome here”
“Bless this Home that it offers us protection and safety”
“Bless this Home that I may grow here”
Step Five: Honor Your Home

For this step, I recommend taking one action to show your Home you honor it. This can be burning your favorite herbs or diffusing oils that are special to you. You can create a piece of Art or hang one. You might hang something above your doorway to remind you of this relationship you’ve honored today. You could make food with your Home’s honor in mind, filling your Home with the aroma of what you’ve created. You may even invite a few others over to share the food (and possibly even ask them to share their gratitudes for their Homes).

As you honor your Home, you might like to walk through your home and read aloud what you’ve written in Steps Three and Four filling the space with your gratitudes and your Home’s Blessings.

After completing Step Five, I recommend closing in a way that feels complete to you. Maybe taking a few deep breaths with your eyes closed, playing or singing a song, blowing out your candles, anything that signals a conscious closing to your Ritual.
Step Six: Repeat

This Moon Cycle we are not only focusing on our relationship with our House Homes, but we are also bringing our attention to our Body Homes, and our Home here on Earth.

I encourage you to repeat this Ritual to honor the Home that is the Body you inhabit, and then again out in nature – in our shared Home, the Earth.
Your Turn!

How did this go for you?
Care to share your gratitudes, your Blessings, the way you chose to honor your Home?
We’d love to read them!
